The world of Stoessi’s Heroes thrives on extraordinary individuals whose courage and determination inspire us. Our newest addition, Susan Travers, is no exception. Her story takes us deep into the scorching deserts of North Africa and shows what it truly means to stand up for freedom and conviction.
Who Was Susan Travers?
Born in London on September 23, 1909, Susan Travers grew up in France. She lived a privileged life but was always driven by an unquenchable thirst for freedom. From a young age, it was clear she didn’t fit into the traditional molds of her time. Adventure and challenges called to her—a pull that eventually led her into the chaos of World War II.
“La Miss” – A Life of Courage and Defiance
In 1940, Susan joined the French Red Cross as a driver. But she quickly proved herself to be far more than just a cog in the machine. She went on to become the first and only woman officially enlisted in the French Foreign Legion, serving at the most dangerous frontlines of the war.
Among her comrades in the Legion, Susan earned the affectionate nickname “La Miss.” This title reflected not just her unique status as the only woman in their ranks but also the deep respect she commanded. Far from being a token figure, “La Miss” became a trusted and fearless ally to the soldiers, sharing their dangers and proving herself time and again.
Her most famous moment came during the Battle of Bir Hakeim in 1942, a pivotal defense against Axis forces in the Libyan desert. Under relentless fire from German and Italian troops, Susan drove an armored vehicle and led a daring convoy out of the besieged position—straight through a minefield. Her bravery saved hundreds of lives and cemented her place in history.
The Woman Behind the Uniform
After the war, Susan Travers shared her incredible story with the world in her memoir, Tomorrow to Be Brave. Her book offers a glimpse into the life of a woman who sought and found her own path. Her courage and unconventional choices continue to serve as an inspiration for those who dare to defy societal expectations and stand for what they believe in.
